2024 Project 12 Farms

Welcome to my 2024 project - Island Farms. Inspired by the Forty Farms project by Amy Bateman I am setting out to capture images of 12 Isle of Wight farms during 2024. As I capture images I am happy with I will post them here. As I set out on this project I have not yet identified all the farms that will form part of this project. One of the ideas of this project is to get me out scouting more to find the images. As of now the farms I have identified to include are:

  1. Coppidhall Farm - Havenstreet

  2. Kemphill Farm - Upton

  3. West Ashey Farm - Ashey

  4. Loverstone Farm - Chillerton

  5. Chillerton Farm - Chillerton

  6. New Barn Farm - Shorwell

  7. Tapnell Farm - Nr. Thorley

  8. Compton Farm - Nr. Brook

  9. Warren Farm - Totland

  10. Nunwell Farm - Ashey

  11. Manor Farm - Wellow

  12. TBC

My plan is to present the images in a 16:9 crop and to try and capture images through the season to show the farms in different states as crops grow and animals move in and out of the fields.

Farm 6 - New Barn Farm - Shorwell. Part of the Bowcombe Estate. Set on the largest private estate on the Island, New Barn Farm has been extensively refurbished to create a wedding venue and a shooting lodge for the Bowcombe shoot. It is set in rolling downs which are captured here as the winter sun set on a late January evening casting light and shadows across the valley.

Farm 9 - Warren Farm near Totland. Sitting alongside the road that leads from Totland to The Needles is Warren farm. Captured here on a winters evening as the light danced over the hills as the sun sank behind the Needles away to the right of the scene. The Cows were making their way towards the tree at the bottom left of the image with the last bus from The Needles back to Yarmouth passed along the road.

Farm 1 - Coppid Hall Farm, Havenstreet. Captured on a frosty misty morning, Coppidhall farm in Havenstreet is one of a number of farms who are now selling items directly to people from onsite shops. The Little Cow shed operates on an honesty basis and has recently been doubled in size. The dairy farm has a herd of cows which graze in the fields around Havenstreet.

Farm 10 - Nunwell Farm, Ashey - Captured from Brading Down looking towards Ryde and the mainland of Portsmouth beyond, the Spinnaker Tower is just visible in the misty hazy morning light. Nunwell Farm is tucked away off the Downs Road from Newport to Ashey but has a lovely herd of Belted Galloway Cows that can often be seen from the Brading Down Road.

Farm 3 - West Ashey Farm - The Vale of Ashey is one of the most reliable places to get a layer of mist sitting across the fields as captured here. The farm is mainly a sheep farm but also hosts the Isle of Wight Grand National and Ashey Scurry run over the hedges across the farms fields.

Farm 11 - Manor Farm, Wellow - A family central farm with a road snaking through between the buildings and the fields this smaller farm was captured on a foggy morning in the late Summer
